Surakarta floods, status raised to alert

Surakarta, also called Solo or Sala, is a city in Central Java, Indonesia of more than 520,061 people (2009)[1] with a population density of 11,811.5 people/km2. The 44 km2 city[2] adjoins Karanganyar Regency and Boyolali Regency to the north, Karanganyar Regency and Sukoharjo Regency to the east and west, and Sukoharjo Regency to the south.[3] On the eastern side of Solo lies Bengawan Solo River. The city is the seat of Surakarta Sunanate kraton (palace/court). Together with Yogyakarta, Surakarta is the heir of the Mataram Kingdom that was split into two kingdoms in 1755.

"Considering that the water level at the Bengawan Solo River reached 9.38 meters, the Surakarta city administration raised its status to alert for the next seven days,” Surakarta Vice Mayor FX Hadi Rudyatmo said Monday at the Surakarta City Hall.

As many as 3,684 houses in 11 sub-districts in the city, including a house belonging to the vice mayor, have been affected by floods 50 to 150 centimeters deep.
